Lots of features have been demonstrated with great presentations at Apple event. I’ve compiled a list of major updates in iPhone 3.0, have a look at it.

  • Peer to Peer: Apple has included Peer to Peer technology in iPhone 3.0, which allows iPhone devices to detect other devices in around the area using Bluetooth.
  • Maps API: Apple has opened Maps API to embedding in 3rd party apps. You can pinch and zoom, get satellite view, hybrid and standard map, add custom notes, use Wi-Fi and cell triangulation.
  • Landscape mode: Landscape mode is available for all applications including mail, notes etc.
  • Push Notifications: It was one of the main attractions in the Apple event. It helps in maintaining battery life and improves the performance of the iPhone. Push notifications has also been optimized for mobile networks.
  • Meebo: Meebo app will be available in iPhone 3.0 firmware.
  • ESPN Alerts: It is a great app for any sports lover. It will send regular alerts of all the sports events with the help of new media player, which uses 3G and Wi-Fi for connectivity.
  • EA Games: EA Games will release 10 interesting games for iPhone users. To give a brief idea about the games, they demonstrated two games, Boatman and The Sims 3. Both games were simply stunning and appreciated by iPhone users.
  • Cut, Copy and Paste: This is one of the much needed features in iPhone. It was difficult to work on iPhone UI and that’s why it required much time to release.
  • Forward Messages: A new app can forward and delete individual messages in iPhone. There is no need to use any third party app for it.
  • MMS: iPhone 3.0 supports Multimedia Message Service. It will allow user to send multimedia files in message format.
  • Spotlight Search: Spotlight search is a new concept for iPhone users. It searches apps, data within apps, music, video files, mails by simply putting the appropriate name of the apps, files etc.

These were the major updates in iPhone 3.0. The firmware will be available to the users in the summer. iPhone developers can start working on iPhone 3.0 Beta which is available on – http://developer.apple.com/iphone/

One important thing to notice is that iPod Touch users will have to pay $9.99 for iPhone 3.0 firmware update. However, current iPhone users will get it for free.
