Once again iPhone Dev team has released an unlocking software, RedsnOw for iPhone users. The redsnOw is now available for Windows and Mac OS X.
The redsnOw has similar functionality to QuickPWN and windows users can also use it to jailbreak and unlock their devices.
As usual, Dev team has stated some important guidelines on their blog. Here’s an excerpt from their blog post -
If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.
- GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
- Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
- This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
- redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
- redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)
Don’t try to use redsnOw without reading their instructions. For more information on redsnOw, just head over to their blog.

Hi, I downloaded the tool, extracted the files… follow all the steps, and finally get a done message, but the iphone 3G goes blank, and nothing happens … if I power off and start normally, it still shows Emergency calls ….. anybody help ?
If you’ve used YellowsnOw previously then the redsnOw won’t work properly on your iPhone 3G.

hi all. please help if you can! i’m on expert on these matters!
my iphone (1st or 2nd gen, silver back) was previously jailbroken a while back (by a friend, so i’m not familier with the process), and i use an orange simcard now.
i stupidly updated to the 3.0 firmware via itunes last week
it duly updated to 3.0, then locked the phone back up, and reverted to emergency calls only.
my questions are:
1. can i use redsn0w to unlock the phone again?
2. …and resynch with all my original data (contact/pictures/calender/apps, etc)?
3. and if so, in what order shall i do the steps?
4. do i need to pop in the original o2 sim card before starting, or can i leave my orange sim in?
5. do i ‘restore’ the iphone first (as suggested by some youtube vids), before starting?
6. i hear the ultrasn0w is out now… would this be a better solution?

btw. it looks to me from looking in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\, that there’s not enough data to indicate that all my images etc are backed up. (argh)

The ultrasnOw software is just for iPhone 3G users. It will not help you much.
Use the latest version of redsnOw i.e. redsnOw 0.7.2 to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone. And yeah, do take backup before starting the process.

You can use any sim card of your choice, there is absolutely no problem with it.
And yes, You should always restore the iPhone.

i have downloaed redsn0w 0.72 and os 3.0 file
When i am running redsnow its asking me to browse for corresponding IPSW firware.
I am not able to find this firm where witten the 3.0 OS restore.IPSW

What do u think is a better unlocking tool , the unlock sim card or the Software unlock.
Although i got Unlock Sim card from http://www.iphone-sim-unlock.com/ they dint work and their customer support really sucks. They send me a Rebel Sim card unlock.
I have been readin that the unlock sim card doesnt affect the 3G capabilities of the Iphone as does the software unlock.
Whats your view on this.
I would suggest you to go for software unlock tool only. The ultrasnOw unlocking tool doesn’t give any problem and works perfectly.
I tryed to run redsnOw on my ipod touch gen.2 with the 3.0 software and I did everything right but when it was done my ipod would’t start up I need help anyone

QuickPWN has not been released for iPhone 3.0. You’ll have to use RedsnOw to jailbreak your iPhone.
ok i donwloaded everything for windows but when it comes to brows for the firmaware i dont get that little box looking thing that everybody has on there videos that say 1,2 3.0 restore i only get a folder that leads me to nothing can u please help me! thanks

Hi, I have successfully jailbroken my phone and i use cydia to upgrade the MobileAppliciation.bat file so i can install downloaded third party apps direct from itunes. Once i have done this though and i switch my phone off, all the apps bought off itunes app store no longer work. The cracked apps work fine though.

Hi, I’ve tried to jailbreak/unlock my iphone 3G 3.0 firmware multiple times but it never works. First off, when i open the redsn0w software it has 2 options which say install cydia and install icy, but no unlock button. I’m not sure what that means. Secondly, after i click both of those options i follow all the steps it says but when it comes time to put my iphone in DFU mode it never works. I hold the power for 5 seconds then the home button for 10 seconds then release the power and hold the home for 20 seconds like it says but my screen goes black, but it DOESNT turn white like it should. I’ve tried this so many times and its never worked. Please help.
I have exactly the same problem, in all the vids and tutorials iv seen they all talk about ticking the unlock box . i just dont get that option.
Is there a certain way i should have all the files you need to do this jailbreak in certain folders .

Had the same problem…actually still having some…but that one I found out recently.
I couldn’t get these options either, but then I got the redsn0w_0.7.2 instead of 0.7.1 and then the option to unlock was there. I also ensured that the FW was correct.

Yes, you can use redsnOw 0.8 to unlock iPhone 3GS.
When i open redsnow, 0.8, and finds the appropriate firmware and then choose it, i always get “unable to recognize ipsw” on the screen. A friend of my, who has unlocked a lot of phones with this program says that he cant understand whats wrong. Please, can you help? Thank You:)

You can backup your contacts in iTunes and then transfer them on new iPhone 3GS.

I tried to upgrade my iphone 8GB (original) as I was prompted in the itunes 9 when I connected my phone. At the end of the process now the phone has only emrgency call and when i connect it to my computer it says the inserted simcard (i was using Hema local sim card on prepaid) does not appear to be supported!. There is nothing to worry. Simply downgrade your iPhone to 3.0 firmware and restore it to 3.1 firmware through iTunes. Use PwnageTool to jailbreak/unlock the iPhone.

HI, Harshad. i have iphone 3g, i believe version 3.1. my phone was unlocked by a friend a month and a half ago. i tried to update to new itunes 3 weeks ago and my phone was locked again. i want to know if i need to download red snow, yellow snow or ultra snow to jailbreak phone again. and if so what do i need to do.

hi harshad, i upgraded my iphone to 3.1 but i can’t jailbreak it bec. redsnow cannot detect the firmware that i used to restore my phone, however my phone already had cydia and icy installed when i upgraded it with the custom firmware that i used.
do i still need to jailbreak it? or do i just have to unlock it with ultrasnow?
i have another problem though, my phone cannot detect wifi connections..

Ok, please help…I am trying to unlock iPhone 2g and possibly have 3g firmware, and am having issues with redsnOw.
I have ensured that all the procedures taken are correct, mirroring exactly the advice of the web, however; I still find issue.
I can get all the way to the “Downloading Jailbreak Data…” (shows icon of Hard Disk with green arrow.)
It says done, (tried both clicking immediately and leaving it.)
But it just continues…then the apple symbol shows and then I get the same screen as before I started (emergency call with connect to iTunes on same screen etc).
I never see the running pineapple at any point.
Note: I have attempted this with the sim inserted and removed.
Keep in mind though…that I do not have any original sim. Will this matter.
I feel I should tell you some background as well.
I did have the phone previously locked, however; the guy I purchased the phone made error when unlocking. I couldn’t add apps for some reason, even though it was unlocked and jailbroken.
I decided to redo the process and enable the ability to do all, plus gain some iPhone cracking knowledge along the way. I know…good job I’m doing…haha.
Anyway, I’ve done everything I can think of from every attempt software related and FW version related and multiple combos. I have even restored the original factory settings with iTunes. Still not sure if that was a good idea though.
Anyway…now I’m rambling. Any assistance you can provide would be spectacular.

If you’ve earlier version of iPhone, it might work properly. Just use proper tools and firmwares mentioned in this blog.

Why do you want to change your IMEI no.? AFAIK, there is no software available for changing IMEI no. on iPhone.
