Guide to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 2G OS 3.0 with RedsnOw

by Harshad on June 20, 2009

iPhone 3.0 As we know, the redsnOw unlocking software is now available for Windows and Mac users. It works fine for iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G, but surprisingly it doesn’t work for iPhone 3G S.

Now, you can jailbreak & unlock iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch and iPod Touch 2G with the help of latest redsnOw tool. You don’t have to wait for QuickPWN unlocking tool to unlock your phone.

Here’s how you can use redsnOw to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 2G. Before using following guide just read the instructions given by iPhone Dev team.

Guide to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 2G OS 3.0 with RedsnOw

Requirements:

Steps to follow:

1. Create a folder on desktop and name it as ‘RedsnOw’. Move all downloaded files to this folder.

2. Connect iPhone to computer with the help of USB.

3. Launch RedsnOw software and browse appropriate .ipsw firmware file from the folder. Click on Next to continue.

4.  If you want to unlock the iPhone then select ‘Unlock’ option from the window. Also select ‘Install Cydia’. Again click on Next to continue.

5. A bootloader window will appear, perform the instructions given on the screen.

6. Once you finish with above process switch off the device and click Next to start with DFU mode.

7. Put your phone in DFU mode by using screen instructions.

8. The redsnOw tool will automatically start the unlocking procedure. Just wait for few minutes to get an unlocked device.

I’ve looked everywhere but still can’t figure it out.

If my 2g iphone is already unlocked, will it become locked once I update to 3.0? Or will it still be unlocked? I know it won’t be jailbroken anymore, but thats not as important to me as having it unlocked.

Thanks!

Harshad June 23, 2009 at 3:28 am

Hi Scott,

Did you use any unlocking tool before? If yes then it will surely lock your iPhone while updating to iPhone 3.0.

darkdon4 June 30, 2009 at 7:21 pm

thanks a lot i’ve jailbreak my iphone this is cool i thought its diffucult but it’s easy following the steps thanks guys you rocks…..

Jeremie July 1, 2009 at 8:07 pm

I upgrade with iTunes first?
I’m not so sure because i read on some sites if i upgrade to 3.0 my baseband gets upgraded so if the unlock doesn’t work. I can’t Downgrade to an unlocked earlier version, right? Thanks!

Harshad July 1, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Hi Jeremie,

I don’t have much information about it. But some sites have mentioned that you can’t downgrade to earlier version.

Jeremie July 1, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Oh ok, but I start with upgrading with iTunes then jailbreaking with redsnOw, right? Cause i’m not so sure.

By the way, can i try the jailbreak again if ever it doesn’t work.

Thanks so much, again.

Harshad July 1, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Yeah, that’s the correct way to do it.

You can repeat this process as many times as you want. ;)

Jeremie July 1, 2009 at 10:20 pm

I’ll go and try it out soon. thanks for the great help. :)

bear July 2, 2009 at 10:57 am

i updated my iphone 2g w/ redsnow, and i also managed to crash cydia. –> reboot! the reboot has lasted almost 10 hours. any ideas what might be wrong? i decided to give up on the waiting, so i re-did redsn0w and lo, the waiting continues! what to do?

Harshad July 2, 2009 at 11:07 am

Try redsnOw 0.7.2.

bear July 2, 2009 at 11:09 am

i did! that’s the funny bit. might have to try it again. and again. :)

Harshad July 2, 2009 at 11:30 am

That’s surprising! RedsnOw should work perfectly with iPhone. :-S

bear July 2, 2009 at 11:32 am

agreed.
i’m going to think on this for awhile, in the meanwhile, gonna dig up some old clunker of a phone until i figure this out. :D

Harshad July 2, 2009 at 11:36 am

Do let me know if you find any solution for this problem. ;)

bear July 2, 2009 at 4:17 pm

got it. :D
had to restore the phone w/ itunes & jailbreak & unlock it.
lost everything that’s on it, but it’s a damn sight better than having to buy a new phone.

Harshad July 2, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Nice buddy. Enjoy your firmware now. :)

Stranger July 9, 2009 at 10:39 pm

RedSn0w .07.2 did not work for my 2g 16gb iPhone running OS 3.0, I tried RedSn0w0.7.2 couple of times but it froze on “restarting iPhone (with that kind of message) so I tried RedSn0w 0.7.1 and that worked for me. My iPhone is unlocked and Jailbroken. This is my first time jailbreaking iPhone!!

Harshad July 9, 2009 at 11:18 pm

Congrats. :)

Richie July 2, 2009 at 11:32 pm

Hi Guys,

I have done this a number of times and when I insert my Sim Card, I just cannot get a signal. I was originally using the very first software and it was unlocked and had signal no problem. But I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks
Richie

Gurner September 5, 2009 at 2:17 am

Exactly the same problem.

Bobby July 3, 2009 at 9:32 am

Harshad July 6, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Kim July 4, 2009 at 12:39 am

Hi! Sorry, first time jailbreaking and i need help.
I downloaded the iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore and also the redsnow .7.1. Did the restore holding shift, then backed up my phone after it was updated to OS 3.0. But when i launched Redsnow, it is not working right.

After my phone was back to normal from updating, i clicked on redsnow .7.1. clicked browse and chose the file iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore. Then clicked next to followed instructions to turn off phone, then hold the power key then with home key for 10 secs, let go power and hold home key for another 10 secs, dfu ok. device detected, went thru automatically thru reboot and all that except when it say uploading RamDisk, it loads four boxes in the progress bar and freezes there. Waited bout an hour and no change. Cancel and redid again but same except this time 2 boxes in progress bar. Third time 4 boxes again.
Then i tried using redsnow .7.2 you had on this site, but same thing. Please help! What am i doing wrong. I have the Iphone 3g and it was previously unlocked before but i reboot my phone yesterday to original factory and lost everything. i dont know what type of jailbreak it was then. Im using Att so i dont need to unlock, just Jailbreak.
Please help Thanks.

Kim July 4, 2009 at 1:01 am

Hello, I have a problem. Please Help. I posted something earlier but i dont see it so ima repost a quick one. Basically, i have iphone 3g. Was jailbroken but i restored to factory setting erasing everything. So im using redsnow to jailbreak. redsnow.7.1 with iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore. Launch redsnow, following instructions choosing that iphone file i just named. Go thru all the steps to put on dfu mode or whatever. It takes to next screen to jailbreak. goes thru rebooting and something about third stage. and finally, it says uploading ramdisk. but after about four boxes in the progress bar it freezes for about over an hour. i cancelled and redid it but samething except with 2 boxes in progress bar when uploading ramdisk. try it bout 5 more times doing the same thing so i decided to use the redsnow 0.7.2 you have on this site and same thing happens. Any suggestions where i went wrong or what i need to do. Please help. Thanks

jack July 4, 2009 at 6:48 am

after i have done all the stuff it tells me to do. my phone says downloading jailbreak data but the computer says it is finished what did i do wrong???

Anurag July 6, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I am at the same stage as Jack.. I wonder how to fix this.

Harshad July 6, 2009 at 11:21 pm

RedsnOw is working fine with others. You guys must have done it something wrong. Please try it again.

Rob July 7, 2009 at 12:25 am

I tried to download the 3.0 firmware and I can’t extract it from the zip file. When I do, the ipsw doesn’t show up. Do you know what could be doing this?

Harshad July 7, 2009 at 12:32 am

Download it from here.

Anurag July 7, 2009 at 9:15 am

Hi Harshad, I redid the procedure and was able to get it up and running.. However, the phone is painstalkingly slow. Screen refresh’s are slow, there is a lag while typing. Any advice? thanks in advance.

Harshad July 7, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I think it’s related to memory. Some of your apps might be consuming lots of memory. Uninstall some old apps or try to update them.

Do take backup of your iPhone before uninstalling useful apps. Let me know the result. :)

Anurag July 7, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Hi harshad, I have about half the phone memory free. It’s working as if it’s in slow motion. Thanks Anurag

Anurag July 7, 2009 at 10:34 pm

And all are updated as well. Maybe I shoul just remove them all for a test.

Grovert July 9, 2009 at 3:21 am

Hey Harshad,

When i down the whole process. It stays on the screen where it says downloading jailbreak data and the circle on the bottom just keeps spinning and spinning. It has been doing it for the past 25 minutes. I’m about to go to bed and let it run to see if it works when i wake up. If it doesnt then I will let you know and maybe you have an idea/solution to this problem. I downloaded the 3.0 firmware from the website you listed above. Thanks!

ZaInuB July 10, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Hi Harshad

I cannot find a corresponding IPSW for the firmware. Everytime i browse i just keep opening the RedSnow folder until theres nothing left to open. i also downloaded the Bit Torrent File which i have no clue about or what to do with.

Plz help
:-)

ZaInuB July 10, 2009 at 7:12 pm

I have found the IPSW file to much delight :-D

Saad July 19, 2009 at 10:09 am

where did u find the file. I am having the same problem

zaire July 10, 2009 at 11:57 pm

i have an iphone original and i unlocked it with quickpwn its on 2.2 right now and i really need to update. The problem is that the computer im using isnt mine and i wont have acess to that computer for a while so if i sync it will erase all my contacts and music correct? Will using RedSnow wipe all of my contacts like restoring to factory. And since i have a 2g iphone that i unlocked with quickpwn will i wont need ultrasnow correct?

Harshad July 11, 2009 at 1:34 pm

If you try to update on other computer then it will definitely erase all the details. You can’t use ultransnOw on iPhone 2G, use redsnOw to jailbreak & unlock the phone.

Angelo July 12, 2009 at 10:08 am

did everythings from winpwn to redsnow 0.8 but nothing works only once.. can’t get it to work and I really am frustrated.. been working on it for 2days straight.. 1 out of 16 or 17 tries i guess with redsnow 0.8 alone… as of now i am trying to use 0.7.1..

here’s the thing after the DFU mode then redsnow will upload and jailbreak the iphone. here’s the problem, iphone will start in white screen.. then it should have a some kind of picture of ram in the iphone (seen it ONCE except for the videos on youtube).. but for me after the white screen it is just black (a blank screen) then after i’m back to the locked screen of iphone that you can only make emergency calls..

can somebody tell me the problem?

thanks in advance..

Harshad July 12, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Hi Angelo,
Which iPhone are you using?
The RedsnOw 0.8 works with iPhone 3G S and not with other phones.

Angelo July 12, 2009 at 4:18 pm

well I just tried everything.. redsnow 0.7.1/0.7.2/0.8

using 2G by the way.. Also used qckpwn and winpwn.. but no luck

Harshad July 12, 2009 at 6:38 pm

RedsnOw 0.7.1 or 0.7.2 should have worked for you. Please use proper guide for your iPhone 2G and don’t use RedsnOw 0.8!

Angelo July 17, 2009 at 4:09 pm

If you read my post both 0.7 and 0.7.2 aren’t working..

Harshad July 17, 2009 at 4:27 pm

What do you mean by not working? Can you elaborate it and explain me in detail?

Angelo July 17, 2009 at 9:35 pm

as I can see you didn’t bothered reading my first comment.. anyways.. after the white screen i should see a ram with a down arrow and a message that my iphone is being jailbroken and then a running pineapple should come after that.. but as for my case it only goes white then black.. if i look at the redsnow window all it says is “Done!”

Harshad July 18, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Hey Angelo,
I read all your comments but couldn’t find the exact problem.
Btw, your issue is quite weird. I’ve not seen anyone reporting such problem here before.
If your iPhone is working properly with earlier firmware then downgrade it and please take the backup. Delete all third party applications and after that, try to upgrade with iPhone 3.0 and jailbreak it with above tools.
I hope this will work for you. :)

Angelo July 18, 2009 at 7:43 pm

i already tried downgrading the firmware but the problem is it won’t.. iTunes always give me the errors 1602 and 1604 when i am trying to downgrade the firmware. (tried in both DFU and recovery mode) well, I guess i’ll need to wait for another FW update.. thanks anyway..

Harshad July 18, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Sad to hear that. :(

Why don’t you try it on your friend’s PC? See if it works or not.

Angelo July 21, 2009 at 11:30 am

I think I found the solution, don’t really know but it worked.

i just installed libUSB-win32, restarted my Desktop, and I also removed other USB devices that is connected to my desktop.. and now my iPhone is jailbroken and unclocked.. :)

@tao xing
try this it may work..

ohh and I used redsn0w 0.8 on that.. :)

Harshad July 21, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Woohoo!!! Congratulations dude. :)

Gustav Wikingsson July 12, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Thanks alot ! :)

ganesh July 18, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Cyberman July 23, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Need help for my iphone 2g 8gb version.

I have updated it to version 3.0 and used redsnow and followed all the steps to jailbreak and unlock.
Right now the problem is, when I insert my sim card it shows the name of my carrier on the top left side of iphone screen and it even receives call if anyone calls me. But the iphone keeps displaying “itunes” screen with usb cord picture.

I even tried to connect my iphone to itunes and opened my itunes account on computer but itunes keep showing it as:

“The SIM card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supporte. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iphone or visit a supported Carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM card”.

Why itnues is showing this message when the iphone is able to receive calls using my sim which is not support?
I guess it shows the phone is already jailbreaked and unlock but for some reason I
am not able to pass that Itunes connect screen which I mentioned above.

Any help from you guys? Thanksss

asl123 August 11, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Ricardo Cuello September 11, 2009 at 2:02 am

Evan July 26, 2009 at 4:12 am

After I tried it, it said it was finished, but it was still loading the jailbreak! And I didn’t know what to so I just turned it off, all it displays is the usb and the itunes. What do I do?

Deborah August 4, 2009 at 5:30 pm

I used this on two iphone 2g yesterday & it worked great on one however the other one is unlocked & cydia is appearing on the home screen however when I try to open Cydia, it tries to open then reverts back to home screen. Any idea what I can do so that I can use Cydia?

Thanks

Harshad August 4, 2009 at 11:21 pm

I would suggest you to try the jailbreak again, and if it doesn’t work then use another RedsnOw version.

Rob August 6, 2009 at 12:43 pm

This helped so much. Got it to work on my 2g with tmobile. Edge didn’t work at first, just opened cydia and then everything worked perfectly. Thank you for this.

I cant get my 2G phone to go into DFU mode. Need help

Osmey September 15, 2009 at 8:45 pm

by the way im just an iphone beginner, i have a 2g with 2.0.1 firmware already jailbroken but i want to know how can i upgrade it without using itunes, is there any software capable of make tha possible? thanks anyway for your comments, i`ll really appreciate your help.

Harshad September 21, 2009 at 7:17 pm

You’ll have to use iTunes to upgrade your iPhone version. There is no other way to do it.

Trevor September 19, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Hi, I just got finished jailbreaking my iphone 2g with 3.0 firmwareusing the newest redsn0w version. Well everything went fine until the end when redsnow just crashed and said it had stopped working. But on my iphone screen it says downloading jailbreak data. IT’s been this way for 8-9 mins now. should I leave it or re-do it?

Harshad September 21, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Try the same procedure with other redsnOw tool.

Adnan Egrlic September 22, 2009 at 7:01 am

I want to upgrade to 3.0 but itunes automatically takes me to 3.1, will this work if I upgrade to 3.1 with itunes then attempt an unlock and jaibreak to 3.0??

I dont want to mess up my phone.

Harshad September 22, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Apple has released new iPhone OS 3.1 and that’s why iTunes gives message to upgrade to 3.1. If you want to unlock and jailbreak 3.0 then download iPhone 3.0 firmware and then upgrade it to iPhone 3.1.

kfly September 25, 2009 at 11:32 am

hey harshad im having trouble with jailbreaking my iphone 3gs. i dowloaded purple rain at 1st and right when i begined it …it was going and all the sudden it said program suddenly stopped and needs to shut down? so that didnt work..then i tried redsnow 0.8 and evrything went relli good until the end where i hafta follow the steps and i thought i did evrything right but everytime i get to the following steps part..right after the itunes thing pops up on my iphone…the jailbreak picture doesnt showw on it…the screeen is just blank(black) and then your supposed to see a pineapple guy…my screen stays black right after the itunes picture….how do i get it to not do this =(

Harshad October 2, 2009 at 12:31 pm

I guess purplera1n is causing this problem. I have not used it on my iPhone, so I really can’t help you in this issue.

Naveen October 2, 2009 at 9:36 am

Hey,

Harshad October 2, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Use the latest version of redsnow and follow the same procedure again.

HARSH October 5, 2009 at 10:45 pm

After I tried it, it said it was finished, but it was still loading the jailbreak! And I didn’t know what to so I just turned it off, all it displays is the usb and the itunes. What do I do?

Harshad October 5, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Could you please elaborate your issue?

HARSH October 6, 2009 at 12:03 am

i basically followed all instructions.. after that it showed ‘ downloading jailbreak data’ on my iphone screen, which took around 10 min to disappear, even though the screen on the comp showed it was done.
after that the screen showed the itunes logo with a usb plug.. left it at that for an hour but no progress at all..
using an iphone 2g, on 2.2.1pwned..
fortunately io tried it on my spare iphone.
plz tell me wats wrong so that i don commit the same mistake while unblocking my iphone.
thanks..

HARSH October 6, 2009 at 12:13 am

FYI.. i tried it multiple times with the same result!

HARSH October 6, 2009 at 12:23 am

oh.. and 1 more thing… i tried both redsnow 0.7.1 & 0.7.2

Harshad October 6, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Well, many people have faced this problem in the past. There is nothing worry about it. It happens when you try to upgrade firmware 2.2.1 to 3.0.
Just check your firmware (or get it from trusted source). Install iTunes 8.2 and keep all bootloader files in a folder. Download redsnow 0.7.2. Now restore your firmware through iTunes and follow the same jailbreaking procedure again.

Oto October 7, 2009 at 4:26 am

Harshad thank you for the info – i have the same issue. Do you meant restore the firmware to 3.0 through iTune 8.2?

Harshad October 7, 2009 at 7:05 am

Yes, you’ll have to restore your firmware through iTunes.

HARSH October 7, 2009 at 11:58 am

thanks dude.. it worked.. but facing an issue with 3.0..
apps such as facebook, skype etc.. are downloading but dont show on my screen!
pl help me with this..

Harshad October 7, 2009 at 9:51 pm

I would suggest you to upgrade it to iPhone 3.1 firmware, which will solve your issues.

Aaron October 12, 2009 at 10:20 am

i cant jail break my phone because it has version 3.1.2 and you dont have any for that so how can i jailbreak my phone??

kelsey October 21, 2009 at 12:54 am

it says click finish but on the phone it still says downloading jailbreak data…
what do i do? please help!!!

Erik November 24, 2009 at 3:09 pm

i have the exact same problem!

Andrew November 18, 2009 at 12:06 pm

So I have followed these steps 6 times but haven’t had any luck.

I get the “Downloading Jailbreaker Program” message on my iPhone. It downloads. My iPhone resets itself but then still won’t detect my sim card.

Any suggestions?

mina December 4, 2009 at 8:12 am

i get try to unlock my 2g iphone i got stuck on “downloading jailbrek data ” for abt 15 min then back to the usb window i didnt got unlocked it is recieving calls but no home screen what do i do pls help?

Mark December 10, 2009 at 12:25 am

I have an iPhone 2g running 3.1.2. I’m trying to jailbreak and install Cydia, but not unlock, as I’m a real AT&T customer. I ran Redsn0w 8, 7.2 but neither could identify the right ipsw, whether I pointed it to the one from iTunes or ones I downloaded elsewhere. I ran Redsn0w 7.0, and that went all the way through the jailbreak process (3 times now), but I don’t see Cydia, nor any difference in the phone. In settings, I know that “restrictions” are already off. What should I do to make this work?

Joel December 25, 2009 at 9:18 am

Hi i’m trying to jailbreak my iphone 3g and i get through everything but when it says “waiting to rebot” it stays there for like over an hour? can someone help please

nomad February 3, 2010 at 12:48 pm

hey there.

so how do i do it properly. cuz i still ain’t get reception. just can use it like a itouch but thats bull!
cheers!

Harshad February 3, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Which firmware are you using on your iPhone?

nomad February 4, 2010 at 12:17 pm

tried different 2 different ones:
first was iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore
this the one were i couldnt choose the unlock option, i can only jailbreack and install cydia/icy works just fine
second beein iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore
here i can choose the unlock option but redsnow freezes at the 2nd reboot stage everytime i tried. well not the programm itself, put the process just wouldnt continue… you know what i mean?
also tried using redsnow 0.7.1 but that didn’t help either

Harshad February 5, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Please put all your iPhone details here so that I can take a look at your issue more effectively.

nomad February 6, 2010 at 3:35 am

I would recommend you to update your iPhone to latest firmware and then use the redsn0w 0.9.4 to jailbreak and unlock it.

nomad February 7, 2010 at 8:00 am

alright, i tried fw 3.1.3 but it froze again.
i believe it’s got something to do with the iphone1,1_3 and iphone1,2_3 things cuz the last one always works, but is not able to unlock.
any suggestions?
for now ill try to run it on a different computer, maybe that will help.

It’s difficult for me to find any solution to your problem. I think you should try to upgrade your iPod to new firmware.
