Android 2.2 vs. iPhone 4.0

Google has just introduced Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ OS for Android phone users. Google team demonstrated interesting features of new Android operating system at Google Developers’ conference.

Now, mobile phone users are actually confused about Google’s Android 2.2 OS and Apple’s upcoming iPhone 4.0 OS. There is no doubt that Android 2.2 has some of the best features, but iPhone 4.0 also has some cool features.

Let’s compare these two mobile operating systems.

As you can see in above table, both Android 2.2 and iPhone 4.0 have almost similar features. Android OS is relatively new OS as compared to iPhone OS, and still it has managed to grab so much attention in last few months.

Android 2.2 and iPhone 4.0 are not released yet, so we can’t really comment on their performances, browser speeds or user friendliness. However, iPhone OS 4 beta is available for developers, and many iPhone developers have given positive feedback for the new iPhone OS.

The good thing about Android operating system is that users get lots of options (in terms of devices) to try the operating system, where as iPhone users have no/limited options.

Well, now it’s up to you. What do you think about these two mobile operating systems? Will Android 2.2 beat iPhone OS 4 in the future?

You have some incorrect info on here…

Android support folders…I have many of them on my Nexus One. Also, the Android Marketplace has over 50,000 apps now.

Also, you leave out other important features that Android 2.2 has on iPhone 4.0:
    – portable hotspot (along with teathering)
    – JIT Compiling for extreme performance increases
    – Native Exchange support with enterprise security features

    • solly

iPhone 4 has the same enterprise features and added multi-account support for exchange.

Hotspot can be done for iphone now, but only if you jailbrake.

  2. Thanks for the heads up. I have updated the post. :)

Did you just increase the App Store for apple from 150k+ to 180k+?

  4. Just confirmed it from Wikipedia. Apple App Store now has over 200k apps.

  5. BT

OS 4.0 does not have wireless/OTA syncing capabilities, unlike Froyo.

    Pretty big one, IMO.

Wikipedia isn't a very good source to use. I can go in right now and change it to say that Apple's App store has 500,000+ apps. I wouldn't use Wikipedia if I were you. Android OS 2.2 si going to be way better than iPhone OS 4.0

Your comparison is over simplified, the multi taksing thing is very much different in Android as compared to Iphone. For books, you are writing that there is no dedicated book reader, comon use one android device and you will come to know how many options are there.

  8. Yes, both platforms have different kind of multitasking features, but the bottom line is they have “Multitasking”.

As far as Android device is concerned, I have been using HTC Hero since last 8 months, and I know the strength and weakness of Android operating system. You should try iBooks application and other iPhone apps before writing such irresponsible comment,

    • iBooks has less books than kindle and nook almost by half, the box under android books should read (Apps Available in Market), the box under iPhone should read (Market, iBooks), The multitasking on iPhone is MultiSuspending, not Multitasking as more than one main app cant run at a time due to memory constraints of the non managed C++ API, only music services and location services can run in the background. Android allows unlimited multitasking possibilities because rather than suspending an app completly it can run any part of an app the developer desires and the OS monitors memory pressure and can informa an app that it should suspend or kill an app in a high memory pressure situation. This kind of multitasking also allows for application to application communication so that 2 apps can actually interact with each other in realtime enabling live plugins or enhanced app-app functionality that iPhone can never support in 512MB of ram due to the native memory model iPhone apps use. Faster isnt always better, flexiblity wins.

  9. Of course, Android 2,2 is a great mobile OS, and has some really wonderful features. If we talk about Quality Apps, iPhone OS 4 will beat Android 2.2 on any given day! Android apps are not even comparable to iPhone apps.

Wikipedia is not a very good source? Please read the App Store Wiki Information, and also read Apple's statement here – http://bit.ly/bWLflu

    • Im an android app developer Challenge me to make ANY iPhone app, and I will make it BETTER for android, the SDK and API are there to more than challenge iPhone apps. My best app is “Living Music Wallpaper”, iPhone cant even have a “Live Wallpaper” so in that case my app is better than any possible iPhone app in that category, if you want an app that shows your albums in an animated collage on your home screen then the best app for that is available on Android, also Need For Speed Shift is AMAZING on DroidX and ive got a HUGE screen, so for playing a game on a large screen you have to have android as iPhones screen is tiny, so for someone that wants to play a game on a large screen ALL games are better on Android, lol, its how you look at it, but for general games and apps the same quality is available on both platforms. The only thing ive seen that iPhone does without a doubt better is Copy and Paste =P, if you want to copy paste than iPhone knocks the socks off of android

I've had an iphone for a year now and I love it. I played with a Moto Droid for about an hour and let me tell you it's not that good. 1) Not so smooth while surfing the web. The screen freezes up alot 2) Some of the same apps that I tried that I have on my iphone do not look as good on the Droid 3) pinch to zoon, scrolling is buggy. 3) Web Pages didn't load as fast as I thought. Yes ATT isn't the best, but by a side by side load test I did outside with both phone, my iphone loaded the same web page faster 4) the apps on the Droid are all over the place, you have to scroll left, right, up down. It just wasn't very user friendly. 5) The iphone is natural, the first day I got it I knew how to use it. With the Droid I had to investigate. I didn't know where alot of things were. It was alot of going in and out of folders to try and figure the thing out. 6) Apple makes the hardware and software. Android can be loaded on any phone. This causes issues with stability between devices. Its like windows on a dell or gateway. I have to relay that the harware will work in harmony with the software, and 5) The phone is just ugly… Just something about the iphone that makes you want to hold it.

While showing iPhone OS 4, Steve Jobs told that there are more than 200000+ apps. Please watch the key note.

  12. Jr.

You tested Android 2.0 vs iPhone 3.0. There is going to be a huge difference when 2.2 and 4.0 come out…

  13. S.D.

I know this is a software comparison … er, competition. But let's be honest, whatever device you've got chances are you love it otherwise you're a moron for dropping money down & buying it. (unless it was a gift)

Each OS has its pros & cons.

No one (sadly) not even Apple are being innovative anymore. Attack of the Clones is the rule of the day now.
Each company is one upping the other with similar if not identical features.

So what separates the two (I mean besides Flash?)
How about customer service? Does that matter anymore?
Droid fans ever try to easily replace a damaged phone? Naw, probably not.
And speaking of who's better … the instant we mention jailbreaking or rooting is when we begin an entirely different conversation.

I mean geez, we sound like a bunch of liberals & conservatives yaking it out!

    Bah.

I have compared iphone 3Gs with 4 of my friends and have blown them away with better quality and speed for streaming on droid. I was loading HQ youtube before they could load LQ. From what I have seen, if there were a “jeopardy smartphone edition”, I would take my droid over 3Gs anyday. It is funny because none of my iphone friends try to pull out there phones for quick info they just tell me “go ahead”.

Easy now IPhone lover Easy… It could be a great phone.. I would love Android on the Iphone 4 hardware.. :)

Can you really consider your self to be a “Tech” person and say that both types of Multitasking are Multitasking. ? One is a True Multitasking in every sense the other is so limited it is more like a save for later mode.

  17. There is nothing like true multitasking and false multitasking. Like I said before, both the mobile operating systems serves the purpose of multitasking and that's what an end user wants to have in a mobile phone.

I’m getting an Android 2.2 but I’ve heard some bad things. Which is better, Android 2.2 or iPhone 4?
