Google buys Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion

In case you don’t know, Google has just announced that they are going to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion.

Google’s CEO Larry Page has confirmed this deal on Google’s official blog. In the blog post, he mentioned that this unexpected deal will supercharge the entire Android ecosystem.

Today, more than 150 million Android devices have been activated worldwide—with over 550,000 devices now lit up every day—through a network of about 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers in 123 countries. Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed to acquire Motorola.

However, Motorola will work as an individual company and will continue to launch its Android based devices in the market. The mobile phone manufacturing company has been producing some decent phones since last few years, but they haven’t got incredible success like Samsung and HTC. Google knows this fact very well, and that’s why they have clarified it to the users and investors.

According to Google, other competitor companies like Apple and Microsoft are teaming up to attack on Android platform, and today’s acquisition is just another step to fight back against these companies. Motorola holds 17,000 patents under its belt and has also filed around 7500 patents for the approval process.

Now, you know the real deal, right? Google has definitely made a smart move in this competition, but its competitors can also acquire other small companies which hold important patents. Google might say that they want to have a healthy competition in the market. But unfortunately, this aggressive step won’t help anyone in the near future.

On the other hand, Motorola users will get an advantage of having Moto-devices, as they will receive early Android updates from the Google team.

What do you think about this deal? Do let us know your opinions and views.
