No Cheap 3G Services in India – Airtel

Sunil Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Airtel, has cleared the speculations over recently ended 3G auctions and the prices. The company has itself bagged 13 circles, including Delhi and Mumbai, in the 3G spectrum bidding process.

Airtel ended up paying Rs 12,295.46 crore for 3G auctions in India, and now they are trying to regain their money from consumers. The mobile phones users in metro cities were expecting some cheap 3G plans for the service, but this is not going to happen anytime soon.

“Take the example of Delhi itself, or Mumbai. The amount for spectrum that has been charged is close to Rs 3,500 crore each… Just to recover license fees and input cost, it works out to be Rs 700-900 per month,” Bharti Group Chairman Sunil Mittal said.

However, the company is expecting the launch of 3G services at the end of this year. The new 3G service prices in India might be different for different regions and metro cities will obviously have to pay more for same services.

Everyone is making buzz of 3G in India, but the truth is that you have to make another hole in your pocket to pay 3G bills in the future. Will you buy 3G services at such outrageous prices?

  1. 3G gives a speed of arnd 3mbps right? If thats the speed and someone tells me it wud cost arnd 1K per month, I think that's cheap… compared to the broadband charges right now..

  2. They may not offer free data usage here and that's the big difference.

  3. pr3m

u mean we're gonna be paying for just connections, or do u mean a data cap will be ensured? in either case 700 isn't much. 900 is steep, if they limit it to below 2 GB.

  4. Well, full details of their plans are not available at this moment.
