Wireless is a new generation mantra to connect with the world. Many people loving this technology and enjoying it in daily life, but as we know that every coin has two sides, this technology also has other side and that is its security.
Wireless LAN users should know the importance of security factor but still 70 percent of users are using unsecured wireless connection. If your wireless is not secured then you may land in trouble, hackers can use your connection and use it for some illegal activities.
Check out the following six ways to secure a Wireless LAN.
1. Administrator Username and Password
Username and password are important things in wireless connection and one should take care of them while setting-up the wireless network. Many routers comes with default username and password; hackers can easily guess them and access your connection so, it is always good to keep secured username and password. Don’t share administrator username and password with other people.
2. MAC Address Filtering
If you find that someone is using your connection from outside then you can do MAC Address filtering. It can be done by checking a long address of your network and filtering the suspicious addresses from the network. To do this, you will have to add MAC addresses of your home equipments on your own so that other devices will not get access to your network. This way you can avoid outsiders from your connection.
3. Upgrade the Wi-Fi encryption to WPA2
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is old encryption standard and it is easy to hack. Upgrade your Wi-Fi encryption to WPA2 which provides more encryption protection than WEP.
4. Change the Default System ID
Many routers have similar system ID (SSID) like the name of the router’s company or just “Default” and most of the Wi-Fi users leave it as a default. Keeping default SSID will not cause any harm but it can give certain indications to hackers like the network is not so secured, name of your router etc. So change the default system id and use your own SSID.
5. Access Point of router
Don’t keep your router near to windows or doors because Wi-Fi signals can reach outside of your house and neighbors or hackers will use it for their purpose. Your router’s access point should be somewhere around the center of house so that it will not reach outside of the house. You can also place your router in such manner that router signals will not pass outside of your location.
6. Disconnect the router
Lots of people have habit of keeping their router on even after completion of work. Keeping router on is really stupid thing to do, as it invites others to get access of your network. So, once you complete the task disconnect your router from the network.
These are the six simple ways to protect your WLAN from intruders. Do you use Wireless LAN? How do you protect it from others?
