Comex, the hacker behind popular Spirit jailbreak, has been planning to release a new jailbreak tool for iOS 4 and iOS 4.0.1 users. The new Spirit jailbreak tool will support all the devices including iPod Touch 2G, iPod Touch 3G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.
For those who haven’t stored SHSH blobs yet, do save it for iOS 4.0 or iOS 4.0.1 as you won’t get another golden chance to rectify the mistake. The hacker is not waiting for Apple to release iOS 4.1, so we can expect the new Spirit jailbreak in next few hours. . Wait for the next update.

SHSH blobs for 4.0.1 or 4.0 are fine; AFAIK there are no substantive differences except the bars
To be clear: if I don’t run into problems, it will work on 4.0 or 4.0.1. No need to update to 4.0.1. SHSH blobs for either are fine.

Yes but do need the SSH blobs as part of the jailbreak process i.e. I have none now on my iphone 4 and missed the slot to get them for 4.0. Would I have to upgrade to 4.0.1, grab SSH blobs, and the armed with these and only then could jailbreak? are the SSH blobs actually going to be needed

You can't save SHSH blobs for iOS 4.0 now; the signature windows is closed. However, you can save SHSH blobs for iOS 4.0.1 using TinyUmbrella.

I’m new to all of this jailbreak. I downloaded it on my ipod 3.1.3 and then made the mistake of upgrading to iOS 4.0.1. and tried to do a jailbreak and it wouldn’t let me. So now I have to wait for a new jailbreak for the new version. And what are SHSH blobs?

Hey guys, Comex is giving us some time to save SHSH blobs. As I have mentioned in the article, he's not willing to release a jailbreak for iOS 4.1. Also, he doesn't have any new exploit for the next version of iOS, so please be patient.

Hey bobby I'm also new to this but as far as I know you don't need SHSH Blobs to jailbreak, but you will need them if you want to downgrade your firmware. Yesterday I downloaded tinyumbrella and as i missed the window to save my SHSH Blobs for 4.0 firmware I saved 4.0.1 in prep for my jailbreak

Hi Sunny, I just wanted to say again I am also very new to all of this and the only knowledge base I have is all the research that I have done, so I may not be 100% correct
I am also in the same situation as you I have the 3gs on firmware 4.0.1 so I am currently waiting for the new spirit release to jailbreak. This is the only source I know of to jail break without previous saved SHSH Blobs. Inregards to downgrade you will have to have saved SHSH Blobs for the 3.1.3, without them you won't be able to downgrade.
I would suggest downloading tinyumbrella and saving the SHSH Blobs you currently have, in prep for your jailbreak when the new tool is released.

IT IS NOT REQUIRED THAT YOU HAVE SHSH BLOBS ON FILE TO DO THE JAILBREAK, IF YOU DONT HAVE THEM ON FILE THEN YOU CAN STILL JAILBREAK, THE REASON FOR PUTTING THEM ON FILE IS TO ALLOW A DOWNGRADE TO AN EARLIER FIRMWARE VERSION IF YOU HAVE TO DOWNGRADE TO APPLY A JAILBREAK WHEN A NEWER FIRMWARE COMES OUT, I.E. LIKE WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE 3GS, YOU NEEDED TO BE ON 3.1.2 RATHER THAN 3.1.3 TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL A JAILBROKEN VERSION OF ISO4, THATS WHY IT WOULD ONLY WORK FOR PEOPLE WHO SAVED THERE 3.1.2 SHSH BLOBS, THESE WERE THE PEOPLE WHO COULD DOWNGRADE TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL A JAILBROKEN IOS4, EVENTUALLY A SOLUTION IS USUALLY CREATED TO NEGATE THE NEED TO DOWNGRADE, LIKE THE UPCOMING SPIRIT, BUT IT IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO SAVE YOU SHSH BLOBS JUST IN CASE A SITUATION LIKE THIS OCCURS. When you talked to comex directly and got official date, then you can tell us. Other then that stop misdirecting everyone and yourself. Actually, I never said he WILL release in next few hours. After reading his tweet yesterday, everyone (including me) were “expecting” him to release the tool in next few hours. Now, there are several other reasons behind the delay of release time.

Hey Josh, You can update your Ipod to 4.0 but the only problem is is that gets rid of your jailbreak. If I were you, I’d wait til spirit releases the new 4.0 jailbreak and then update from 3.1.3 to 4.0 just to be sure

You’re gonna need to know your firmware version.
You can jailbreak without know more info about your iPhone. go to Settings>General>About then tell me your version and model

its a sort of unique signature that apple uses to sign your phones firmware which apple stop giving out when they release a newer firmware and you can save them by a) jailbreak your iphone and use cydia's 'make my life easier' function or b) use a program called tinyumbrella (http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/) directly of your PC/Mac

Restore your iDevice to older firmware and again try updating to new firmware.
