Apple is now all set to launch its iPhone 5 devices in the forthcoming media event, where Tim Cook, the new CEO of company, will probably demonstrate the new products. Since the announcement of this event, everyone is excited to know the details of Apple’s iPhone 5. But the “Let’s Talk iPhone” invitations have also raised an obvious question in people’s mind, and that is – will Apple discontinue the iPod lineup?

When Apple was struggling with its computer devices, iPod brought the much needed profit for the company. Now, Apple has become a top company in the tech field, and they have learned to generate profits from other products like Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.
According to TUAW’s anonymous source, Apple is now planning to discontinue the iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle devices from its popular iPod lineup. Currently, all iPod devices except the iPod Classic are supporting flash-based memory to store the data whereas the old generation iPod boasts a platter-based hard drive. In terms of business, flash-based devices always help companies cut the manufacturing price, which is a big plus point for Apple as it has been selling millions of iPod devices each year.
iPod Shuffle, on the other hand, doesn’t make much profit for the company. This low end portable music player was designed to attract fitness freaks, tourists, travelers etc. Last year, Apple has introduced a touch screen iPod Nano model, which automatically replaced the iPod Shuffle. So, it makes no sense to sell similar devices in the market, as one of them would eventually fail to hold its place.
If Apple decides to kill these two iPod devices, all iPods will be available in the touch screen form and iPod Touch will have larger screen space than other players. Considering the ongoing business strategies, Apple will not sell less profitable devices for longer term and will concentrate on best selling devices like iPhone and iPad.
After the iPhone 5 launch event, the company is likely to host another event in November or December to reveal its new iPod lineup. Till then, you can grab an iPod Classic or iPod Shuffle for yourself.
