Today, my classmate curiously asked about small URLs which I always use on various social networking websites. Firstly, I didn’t know what he was talking about, but soon I realized that he wanted to know about URL shortening concept.
Many people in this world are not aware of URL shortening services. Wikipedia has clearly explained the meaning of URL shortening. Here’s an excerpt from their article -
According to Wikipedia,
URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web where a provider makes a web page available under a very short URL in addition to the original address.
URL shortening services are getting very popular these days as micro blogging sites, social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have managed to attract large amount of users across the world.
TinyURL is one of the first URL shortening services on the Internet and it’s still popular in tech forums, communities and web groups. However, now we have new improved services, which also offers some other features including social bookmarking, real time statistics and toolbars.
These services are quite reliable when we use online messengers and chat boxes, as it’s very convenient to share short URLs rather than long URLs. Some affiliate marketers also use these short URLs for link cloaking so that users can’t see the affiliate link before actually clicking on the link.
I’m sure this article will be helpful for those who don’t have any idea about URL shortening and different services available for it. Don’t forget to bookmark (Ctrl + D) it for future reference. I’ll write another article to share best URL shortening services available on the Internet. Stay tuned!

THanks for the info. I know about it.
But do you know how do they achieve it? or implement it?
I don’t know how to implement it, but it can be achieved by writing URL shortening script. I’ve found an article on how to build your own URL shortening service, you can check it here – http://tinyurl.com/cr874f
Very good read Harshad. I personally like Bit.ly a lot due to it’s usability.
Thanks bro.
