A refined experience awaits aboard Holland America Line's venerable Veendam, which was built in 1996 and refreshed in 2009. The ship has the graceful lines of a classic ocean liner and is spacious without feeling stuffy. Its elegant dining rooms, a $2 million art collection and wide teak decks with sweeping foredeck seating set it apart from the hulking megaships of today.
The ms Veendam sails routes ranging from Canada and New England to Hawaii, Mexico, the Panama Canal and Europe. It also conducts 35-day transatlantic crossings and seven-day Bermuda cruises. On most voyages, the cruise line brings local culture to the ship by featuring port-inspired activities and menus. The ship's theater hosts two featured performers per night. Acts range from hits to equally dramatic misses; on my cruise, a funnier-than-you'd-think comic and a juggling act brought the house down while a talented vocalist delivered an Elton John tribute that was "better than the real thing."
The ms Veendam features seven cabin categories including spacious Pinnacle Suites. All staterooms have a mini bar and refrigerator, flat-screen television and a large bathroom with a tub and shower. Guests will also find complimentary Elemis(r) bath products and an iPod dock. A recent refit included a number of Holland America Line's Signature of Excellence enhancements, including a revamped Explorations Cafe and Mix Bar and the new Dive-In at the Terrace Grill, which serves burgers and hot dogs.
