The Altra Timp 3 is a solid long-distance trail shoe with plenty of cushioning and protection. It is a great choice for those who want a shoe that will work well on trails, as well as roads.
The upper has been updated, and feels more robust than the previous version. This is thanks to a new, more durable material and a better fit around the instep.
BETTER GRIP
The outsole is made with MaxTrac rubber, which gives excellent traction on most surfaces. It also has arrow-shaped lugs at the forefoot and longitudinal bars at the heel that aid directional movement and increase stability on steep descents.
A slightly higher profile midsole helps to promote a natural gait cycle and reduce energy expenditure in the shoe, making it a very comfortable ride for a longer distance trail shoe. The midsole is very cushioned and supportive, but doesn’t feel stiff or overbuilt, which is perfect for longer outings where you might encounter rocky terrain.
EVEN SLIGHTLY MORE SPREADING
The Timp 4 features an even more spread-out EGO MAX midsole compound, which has significantly more give than the previous versions, allowing it to flex in a way that’s more natural for runners. While the outsole is a bit soft for running on loose surfaces (like granite), it’s not a significant detriment to performance and shouldn’t be an issue for most runners.
STRUCTURED foot-bed
The upper on the Timp 3 feels very structured, with a lot of padding at the front and a bit less on the back. This is a good thing, as it helps to support the arch, and the 29mm of cushioning is great for long-distance trail runs.
