bauhaus portland review
Despite the fact that they have a comparatively niche audience, those who do profess to be fans of gothic legends Bauhaus are some of the most dedicated and passionate people in music. That translates to their concerts, where the entire venue can sometimes be a sea of black and even more spooky attire. When Peter Murphy twirls his cane and croons like a melodious vampire in "Bela Lugosi's Dead," it is impossible to not be completely engrossed.
Seventeen years have passed since the cult band last performed in Portland and they were still as darkly powerful as ever. Opening with a cover of John Cale's "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores," lead singer Peter Murphy rushed onto the stage before guitarist Daniel Ash and bassist Kevin Haskins. The group then settled into a ferocious rendition of "In the Flat Field."
Although they have only played a handful of live shows this year, the reunited Bauhaus still has an enormous following. The band released their first new song in 14 years titled, "Drink the New Wine," and has been touring across Europe and North America.
Earlier this month, Bauhaus announced they were adding more dates to their tour schedule. Starting May 14 at Cruel World Festival in Pasadena, the band will also play in Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Tempe and two shows in New York City. Tickets for the new dates are on sale now.
