In the dystopic future of 2080, two thirds of the United States is a toxic post nuclear wasteland and megacity Mega-City One is ruled by an unrestrained police state where Judges are part cop, jury, and executioner. Starring Karl Urban as the titular character, Dredd offers a day in the life of the street Judge and focuses on telepathic rookie recruit Anderson (Olivia Thirlby). Assigned to evaluate the competence of rookie Judge Cassandra “Andy” Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), Dredd and her escort investigate a trio of homicides at Peach Trees, a 200-story slum tower block that dwarfs New York's Empire State Building. Their investigation leads them to the drug lord Ma-Ma Madrigal who executes one of her henchmen with a shotgun to the face, but Dredd reads his mind to learn more about the criminal organization.
While the lean and mean style of the action sequences echoes Carpenter's low budget film aesthetic in Assault on Precinct 13 and Escape from New York, Dredd lacks the larger-than-life explosions and bodycounts that characterize contemporary blockbusters. It's a testament to the strength of its characters and story that the film still resonates so strongly today.
