In his short arc that begins with issue #344, David does an amazing job of giving this story a depth that only comes from the intimate nature of small interaction between characters. It's a great way to convey the tragic and emotional aspect of Banner's snapped psyche, which has given rise to multiple sentient iterations of the Hulk. (As well as a few "upgrade" forms.)
Pre-transformation, Bruce reacted to anything that came at him with no noticeable emotion. Even when his mother scolds him for talking about nanomeds and gamma rays with Betty, he doesn't express any emotion at all. Likewise when the film's secondary villain, Glen Talbot, arrives, he responds with nothing more than a belated outpouring of rage.
Then there's Jarella, who loves both the savage Hulk and puny Banner. This makes her a very unique creature who seems to love both sides of her husband's personality. The fact that she can love both of them shows just how much the Hulk is part of Bruce, and how much he's like a wild side of him that has never been unleashed.
