How Long Does a PlayStation 4 Controller Take to Charge?

As with any electronic device, it takes a little time for the internal battery to charge to full capacity. The controller will begin to charge after a couple of hours when connected to a USB cable. However, the exact amount of time that it takes for a controller to charge will vary depending on a few factors. These include the condition of the controller, the type of charger and cable used, as well as whether or not the controller is being actively used.

The PlayStation website says that a fully charged controller will take about 2 hours to charge from a completely dead state. It will take longer if the controller is being used while plugged in, since part of the charge will be used for the functioning of the device. The output specs of the charger or charging ports will also impact the charging time, with lower-output power chargers taking longer to charge.

A good way to know when a controller has finished charging is to simply check the light bar. This will slowly blink orange and then turn off when the device has reached its full charge. Alternatively, you can use the PlayStation button to display the battery status. This method is a bit less accurate, but it will still show you when the controller has charged. You can also place the controller in rest mode to save on electricity and allow it to charge more slowly.
