When a consumer buys something online at Target, the company will request a pre-authorization hold on their credit card to ensure they have enough funds for the purchase. Once the order has shipped or been picked up, the company will then charge the credit card. It can sometimes be confusing for consumers to understand exactly when their card will be charged.
In some cases, a credit card will have multiple charges on their statement. This happens when a company ships goods to multiple locations, and they are then picked up by customers at their local store or delivered to their home. When this occurs, the transaction is split into several completed charges that all equal the original pending amount held as a pre-authorization hold on the credit card.
If a customer’s order contains fresh groceries or Starbucks items, the store cannot keep them fresh for more than 30 minutes after the end of the pickup window. For this reason, if a customer does not pick up their order in the designated time frame, it is canceled and refunded to the shopper’s original form of payment. Refunds to a Target RedCard typically take two days, while refunds to third-party cards can take up to five days.
For most shoppers who utilize Pickup or Drive Up, their orders will be ready within the store’s operating hours. However, some stores may need to take up to six hours to fulfill and prepare an order. Target explains that this could be due to newer locations training larger batches of team members, or if they are working with hazardous materials.
