How much is prime drink?

Prime drinks have taken the world by storm since they were introduced to consumers in 2022 by YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul. Their popularity has led to the drinks selling out almost everywhere and being resold by third-party sellers at significantly marked up prices. The craze for the drinks has even caused shops to limit how many of the beverages you can purchase at a time, with people being filmed elbowing each other out of the way to grab a bottle in one supermarket in the UK.

Although the drinks scream ‘sports and hydration’, they are mainly an energy drink with only 10 calories per can and less than half a gram of sugar, plus some B vitamins, taurine and electrolytes. However, the drinks are also loaded with 200 milligrams of caffeine – that’s the equivalent of two cups of coffee.

Caffeine can be beneficial for adults who have a healthy diet and exercise regularly but is not recommended for kids or young teens, says Dr Rebecca Carl, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. Taking in too much caffeine can cause nervousness, changes in heart rhythm and high blood pressure.

The fact that Paul and KSI’s social media followings skew very young is also concerning, she adds. “Since they are heavily marketed to a youth audience, it’s critical that the FDA look at these marketing practices in a more transparent way,” she said. Other energy drink companies that have been scrutinized by the FDA in the past have had to alter their messaging or change the way they market to avoid misleading younger consumers, she says.
