How Often Does AirTag Update Location?

Apple’s AirTag is a powerful tool that provides valuable tracking features. It is a great deterrent to thieves and keeps your belongings safe while you travel. It allows you to set precise geofencing and alerts, so that you are notified if your AirTag moves outside the designated area. It also lets you share tracking with friends or family members, making item retrieval much easier.

The AirTag is a tiny device that packs in a lot of functionality in its diminutive frame. It’s equipped with a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) chip, an accelerometer for movement detection, a speaker that emits a sound to help you find the object, and a user-replaceable CR2032 battery. The device is designed to be compact and portable, so that it can easily be attached to a backpack, keychain, or pet’s collar.

In order to function, the AirTag must connect with other Apple devices in the broader network and communicate with them via the Apple Find My app. The frequency with which this happens depends on a number of factors. In crowded areas that are densely packed with iPhones, the AirTag might refresh its location every few seconds. In less populated areas, it might take a few minutes until an iPhone within range detects the beacon’s encrypted signal and passes it on to the network.

The sensitivity of the Bluetooth or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) connection between the AirTag and Apple devices can also affect how frequently it sends its location to the broader network. The stronger and more stable the connection, the more frequent the updates will be.
