Cuphead and Mugman, the cartoon duo who serve as your guides throughout a side-scrolling video game about repaying a debt to the Devil, aren't very young. The two brothers live on the fictional Inkwell Isles, under the watchful eye of Elder Kettle. They're fun-loving kids who enjoy spending time in the library, eating pancakes with butter and syrup or making crafts with yarn. They're also a little reckless and often take risks that could land them in trouble.

Upon release, the game was an instant success and was widely praised for its charming visuals and challenging gameplay. It was ranked among the best games of 2017 by Entertainment Weekly, GamesRadar and Polygon, while winning numerous awards.

The game's creators, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer of Studio MDHR, were inspired by the golden age of cartoons like those produced by Walt Disney Studios and Fleischer Studios, as well as animation artists such as Ub Iwerks and Willard Bowsky. They wanted to create a game that looked old but had modern playability and controls. To that end, they used rubber hose animation, a style that was popular in the 1930s, and employed a team of animators from around the world, including Romanian illustrators, Brooklyn painters and an Ontario jazz musician.

When fans asked how old Cuphead and Mugman are, the studio responded that they were "kidults" — a term that suggests they're technically adults but remain in touch with their childish natures. Since the brothers are often seen gambling, we can assume they're 18 years old or older.
