How Tall is a Hobbit?

Hobbits have captured the hearts and minds of many fans, both in books and on the big screen. These diminutive beings are often compared to dwarfs, and some people wonder how tall a hobbit is.

The answer to this question is a bit complicated, as there are some differences between the various races of hobbits. The average height of a hobbit is about three feet six inches, though it varies quite a bit between the different kinds. The tiniest of the hobbits, called Harfoots, were barely two feet tall, while the Fallohides were somewhat taller. The Stoors were a bit shorter than the Fallohides, but they were sturdier and more muscular than the Harfoots.

According to Tolkien, Hobbits were roughly half the height of a Dunedain man. This was based on a linear measurement called a "Ranga" that measured the length of a stride, from heel to toe, for a Numenorean man moving at full marching pace.

The film version of The Lord of the Rings, which Peter Jackson directed, varies from Tolkien's original descriptions in several ways, including how tall a hobbit is. This is because it was hard to find actors who were a good match for the various dwarves and hobbits in terms of height, and Peter Jackson needed to have them stand side by side to create a sense of scale. For example, Richard Armitage was chosen to play Thorin Oakenshield because he is slightly taller than the other dwarves, which made him stand out from the rest of the group and make his character more visually distinct.
