In an era when consumers want flexibility, personalization and promptness, technology allows retailers to outpace their competitors. Retailers should be careful to choose technology that addresses their business needs, not just what's "in vogue." Adopting tech simply because it's trendy could actually drive loyal customers away.

A great place to start is by assessing your current toolset. Take stock of your POS software, security systems and team management apps to determine whether or not you need to add new functionality. Once you've got a list, prioritize the top ones and decide if they are delivering what you need them to do.

Next, consider your e-commerce capabilities and how you can improve on them in your brick-and-mortar stores. For example, implementing a buy online, pick up in-store (BOPIS) process allows shoppers to complete their entire shopping experience without leaving the store and avoids stockouts. Similarly, automation in warehouses can streamline shipping and reduce costs.

Finally, look at how you can integrate granular data analytics into your retail operations. AI and machine learning technologies can provide unprecedented insight into customer behavior, including buying patterns and preferences.

The more tedious tasks that can be automated in your stores, the more time you can devote to interacting with shoppers and building a brand story that stands out from the competition. The key to successfully integrating new technology into your existing infrastructure is an open approach to working with your vendors, one that encourages rapid testing and speedy integration.
