After a disastrous season where the service, which allowed subscribers to see one movie per day for $10 a month, nearly went bankrupt, MoviePass was shut down. But the company announced it would relaunch in 2022 and has been slowly expanding its service since then. If you signed up and have been wondering how to activate your movie pass, this is what you need to know.
The new MoviePass will work much like the old one, except it uses a credit system instead of a fixed price model. Subscribers will receive an allotment of credits each month based on their pricing tier, which they can use to purchase movie tickets at the theater using their included debit card. The number of credits required for each film will vary based on the time and day of the show, with unused credits rolling over from month to month.
If you’re an existing member of the old MoviePass, the new app will automatically add free credits to your account. The service will also be accepted at the same theaters it was previously, including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark locations.
The only catch is that the waitlist for the new MoviePass closed on Aug. 29. If you want to join, you’ll need a friend to invite you. Then you’ll need to wait for your MoviePass card to arrive in the mail, which should take 10-15 days. Once you have it, just download the app and search for a theater and showtime that works for you. Then head to the theater, check in using the app and swipe your card at a kiosk or box office to purchase your ticket.
