How to Lock a Tesla

Tesla has several ways you can lock your car and secure it when you’re parked. This article will show you how to use the key card, smartphone app and third-party apps to lock your car from inside or outside the vehicle. You’ll also learn how to unlock your Tesla with or without key cards or fobs and from the front or back seats of your vehicle.

Using Your Key Card

Tesla Model 3 comes with two thin, credit-card-sized key cards that fit in your wallet. To activate the card, place it in the card reader located in the driver’s side door pillar. The car then recognizes the activated card as the owner’s and locks all doors. This is a useful backup method for accessing your car if you forget your phone or key fob. To keep your key cards in good condition, protect them from impact and high temperatures, as well as from solvents and abrasive cleaners.

Using Your Phone as a Key

To lock or unlock your Tesla with your phone, touch the lock icon on the center touchscreen. The app will display “Please wait, your phone is connecting to a vehicle.” Once the connection is complete, the button will change to unlocked and the doors will automatically close.

You can enable or disable this feature through your mobile phone’s settings. If you have the optional acoustic locking confirmation sound turned on, a quiet beep will play to confirm that the doors were locked or unlocked.
