How to Lock a Tesla Without a Locksmith

Nobody likes getting locked out of their car, especially when that car is a Tesla. But with a little know-how, you can quickly get back in without having to call a locksmith or resort to desperate measures.

First, make sure you’re not standing too close to your Tesla. If you are, simply move a few feet away. Next, locate the key icon on the touchscreen display inside your vehicle and tap it. The key settings menu will open; find the “Remove a Key” option, and select it. This will remove the key from your paired devices, preventing it from automatically locking the vehicle when you’re not around to do so yourself.

If you have a spare key card, it’s a good idea to keep it in your wallet or purse. If you have the key fob or smartphone paired with your vehicle, pressing either the black or white button on the key card will lock it (or unlock it, if you press the other). Then just place the card against the center pillar of the driver’s door and the side mirrors will fold down to let you in.

Lastly, you can always contact Tesla’s customer support for help. They may ask a few security questions to verify your identity, but once they do, they can remotely unlock your vehicle for you, allowing you to get on your way. Just don’t forget to thank them for their assistance! They deserve it!
