Tiktok is a video-sharing platform with an immense range of content for just about everyone. The company tries to keep its content family friendly and has even introduced features to help parents and guardians control their teens’ Tiktok experience, including restricting some videos and disabling direct messages and the following feed through Family Pairing. However, despite their efforts to ban videos and users that promote hatred and discrimination, some anti-LGBTQ content has managed to slip past Tiktok’s filters and remain available for underage users. As such, the company has updated its Community Guidelines to prohibit any content that promotes hate and adolescent violence, as well as deathnaming, misgendering, and conversion therapy.
Tiktok also recently announced that they will be banning any content that contains explicit lyrics and images in a new update to its Terms of Service, citing that their use could cause harm or distress to minors. As a result, many users are receiving an ’age restricted’ error on the app when they try to view certain videos and posts. While this can be a huge inconvenience for many, it is not impossible to fix and there are a few methods you can try that may work for you.
To turn off the ’age restricted’ message on tiktok, go to your profile at the bottom of the screen and tap the menu button. Next, select ‘Content preferences’ and then 'Restricted mode'. You will then be prompted to enter the passcode you used to enable Restricted mode, which should remove the age restriction on tiktok.
