Since Tesla vehicles don’t run on an internal combustion engine they don’t really need to be turned off in the same way as traditional cars. Instead, they power off automatically when you exit the vehicle and shift into Park mode. Tesla also uses a different method to power off the car when it senses that you’re not in the vehicle and has been inactive for 15 minutes or more.
There are a few things that you should know about turning off your Tesla Model 3 or X or Y. First, the easiest way to turn off your Tesla is simply to walk away carrying your fob, key card or phone key (authenticated phone linked to your vehicle). This will automatically shut off your vehicle.
Second, you can use the “Power Off” button on your touchscreen to manually force a shutdown. This will prevent your vehicle from turning on again when prompted with a fob, phone key or Key Card and can be useful if you are experiencing unusual behavior in your car or you want to prevent your battery from draining too quickly.
Finally, if you are going to be leaving your Tesla for an extended period of time it is a good idea to place the vehicle into Sleep mode rather than just shutting off the touchscreen. This will ensure that the car will automatically power off after 15 minutes of inactivity and will reduce the chance of a battery drain in case you forget to shut off your vehicle in the morning.
