How to Unlock Metro Phones

If you want to use your Metro PCS phone on a different carrier (or sell it or take it abroad), you will need to unlock it. This process is easy enough with the carrier directly if you fulfill their unlocking requirements, or you can use an external service such as SafeUnlocks.

Metro by T-Mobile (MetroPCS is now Metro by T-Mobile) and other wireless carriers set their unlock eligibility requirements primarily to ensure that the device's owner has met certain obligations with them and/or has paid in full in case it was financed on an installment plan, as well as to protect the integrity of their network by making sure that the IMEI is not reported as stolen or lost and does not have a history of fraudulent activity. They may also limit the length of time that the device was used on their network or the number of refills purchased.

If you meet these requirements, Metro will send you an email with a device unlock code within 2-3 days of your request. However, if you are an active duty military member who is preparing for deployment, you don't have to meet the 180-day activation and service requirement and can instead visit a Metro by T-Mobile store in person or have a family member do so on your behalf and present your deployment papers. They will then complete the unlocking process and email you a code to make your phone available for use on another T-Mobile network or compatible international network.
