The HP Elitebook 8440p Core i5 Laptop is a high-performance work machine that doesn’t skimp on features. Its sleek chassis is sturdy enough to withstand normal travel and daily wear. The only downside is its battery life, which lags behind most of its rivals. But overall, the HP Elitebook 8440p is an excellent value.
The Elitebook 8440p is built to meet military MIL-STD-810 standards for dust, shock, and vibration resistance. It’s also designed for easy repair and upgrades. Its chassis is made of magnesium alloy and anodized aluminum, with a spill-resistant keyboard and active hard-drive protection.
In our PCMark Vantage tests, the Elitebook 8440p earned a score of 5,552, which is well above average for thin-and-light notebooks. Its 7,200-rpm, 250GB hard drive booted into Windows 7 Professional in just 44 seconds and copied 4.97 GB of mixed media in 2 minutes and 49 seconds for a rate of 29.6 MBps—well above the category average of 23.5 MBps.
On the other hand, gaming performance was less impressive. During our World of Warcraft test, the Elitebook 8440p produced just 27 fps at 1024 x 768 resolution and low graphical settings.
The EliteBook 8440p has a good variety of ports, including two extra USB ports, a FireWire port, an SD card reader, and headphone and microphone jacks. However, it lacks HDMI, which would allow you to connect to a larger external display. It has a two-megapixel webcam that offers smooth and clear video during video calls. The laptop comes with a three-year limited warranty and toll-free phone support from HP.
