In this Disney adventure, we embark on a rollicking thrill ride down the Amazon River with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) and intrepid British scientist Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt). When they discover an arrowhead of a flower that possesses healing powers, they're determined to find it.
Luckily, Frank is more than up for the task and he guides them on his ramshackle but charming boat La Quila. It's not long before the pair come across the legendary tree, the Tears of the Moon, and a mystical flower that has the power to heal the world.
The spooky side of the jungle comes to life in 4DX thanks to rain, wind and scents which create a surrealistic setting that's perfect for a fantasy adventure. And what's more, the 4DX seats offer a range of motion, allowing you to feel the seat move and vibrate as you take on the raging rapids along with your hero.
It's the kind of escapism that can't be found anywhere else and it feels like the director, Jaume Collet-Serra, is tapping into a similar vibe to the old Saturday matinee serials. There are a few derring-do scenes and dastardly villains that keep the film on the edge of your seat.
The movie is also well paced, with frequent cliffhangers that keep the audience on their toes. The chemistry between Blunt and Johnson is fantastic, with the pair's charm and charisma carrying the film throughout. The action is bombastic and exciting, but it never feels over the top or out of place in this family-friendly film.
