This month, Oregon wine producers made a splash at the New Orleans International Wine Awards. The region earned nine gold medals, including five in the Pinot Noir category. The wines were poured at the event’s gala dinner, which benefitted public broadcasting stations across the Gulf Coast.
The vineyard block the winery calls Gopher Hill — after the critters that scurry around the vines there — produces this expressive single-vineyard Pinot. Indigenous yeast fermentation and aging in mostly used French oak deliver a wine that offers tantalizing aromas of tart cranberries, cola, and rhubarb. A generous, deep concentration of fruit on the palate is accented by fine tannins and vibrant acidity.
This collection of three wines from Kiarna Vineyards includes a Chardonnay that’s infused with green apple and vanilla notes and a Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers smooth dark fruit flavors. The bottles arrive nestled among an assortment of delectable treats, including smoked Gouda cheese spread, sesame crackers, Ghirardelli chocolate squares and cookies, Godiva milk chocolate truffles, Toblerone chocolate and more.
