MetaZoo is a trading card game for 2-4 players that takes place in the Cryptid Nation. Players are Casters who use their decks to represent Spellbooks from which they cast powerful Spells, summon ancient Artifacts, and form Contracts with beloved Cryptids to aid them in the Arena. The game uses "fourth wall" effects where real-world actions and your surroundings impact the game. For example, cast water spells when it's raining or partner with Dark Beasties while the Cumberland Dragon roars in the distance.

The game has a very friendly and welcoming community of around 12,100 members on its Discord channel who share tribute art, new releases, and gameplay videos. The most committed players can even take an exam, conducted monthly, to become a recognized Metazoologist.

However, the high price points for specific cards can be intimidating to first-time players. This is exacerbated by the fact that most of the rare cards are only available as Rare Holo’s (non-foil) and can be difficult to pull in booster boxes. This has created a group of nine cards called the OBNOXIOUS 9 that are extremely hard to find and have been compared to the difficulty of finding a first-edition Pokemon Charizard hologram or an unopened Magic: The Gathering booster box.

Overall, MetaZoo has some very neat mechanics and a solid design, but the lack of draw and familiar feel can make it a little slow to get into. It’s also not uncommon for games to bog down into a chugging exchange of combat cards and can leave some players feeling bored.
