New Balance 860v12 review
A good shoe to choose if you are a moderate overpronator looking for a stable running shoe that offers both stability and cushioning. This latest version of the Fresh Foam X 860 from New Balance adds a more flexible upper that increases the comfort and fit of the shoe. They also have improved the midsole foam to make it a bit softer but still firm enough to offer stability for your runs.
The new 860v12 uses a two-layer design of New Balance's fresh foam X technology. The bottom layer is made from a thick blown rubber that is soft on the feet and adds durability to this trainer. It is a little stiffer than some other everyday trainers that use this type of material but it doesn't feel too stiff when you are on the footpath or doing a long run. The top layer of the fresh foam X is made from a softer foam compound. This helps to make the shoe more flexible and to create a smooth ride from landing to toe off.
This shoe is a little heavier than some other everyday trainers that are on the market but the weight doesn't really have any impact on how the shoe feels or how well it performs. The stability is more subtle than some other models of the shoe and it won't feel as clunky as some traditional stability shoes that have a larger medial post that is very obvious when you run in them.
