Selena Quintanilla captured a nation with her signature style of Latin music, earning the label Tejano Madonna. She also captivated the young heart of a man named Chris Perez, the handsome rock guitar prodigy who joined her family's band, Selena y Los Dinos. Jesse Posey, who plays him in the Netflix drama Selena: The Series, says he studied old interviews of the real couple to understand the depths of their relationship. But, as the harrowing biopic's title suggests, their story was tragically cut short by a family feud.

After a successful career as the lead singer of the Tejano group Selena y Los Dinos, Selena decided to try her hand at English-language recording. She made three demonstration recordings for EMI Latin's chairman, Charles Koppelman, who initially declined her request to make a crossover album. However, he relented after he heard the acclaimed 1995 album Dreaming of You. The album's first single, "I Could Fall in Love," gave Selena her biggest break on the American charts.

The track's romantic lyrics and the singer's emotive enunciation earned acclaim from critics. They compared her voice to those of Celine Dion, Brandy Norwood and TLC. The song was an immediate hit and the sexy tune became one of Selena's most famous, recognizable recordings. It was covered by numerous artists, including Adrienne Bailon and Gloria Estefan. The song also earned a nomination for the 1996 Tejano Music Awards' Music Video of the Year. In addition, it topped the Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks.
