severance episode 8 review

The penultimate episode of severance brings us closer to uncovering the mysteries at Lumon Industries. The thriller series centers on employees who undergo a mindwipe medical procedure called “severance” that separates their work and personal memories. While the biotechnology corporation tries to hide their secret, one employee, Mark Scout, has been relentlessly pursuing the truth.

During the episode, MDR celebrates Helly’s reaching her quota at the worksite and she tells Dylan she is ready for the “waffle party.” But, as MDR prepare to eat, Milchick interrupts their conversation, escorting Helly to her stairwell before the alleged waffle party. Dylan then attacks him, claiming that the severance process isn’t what they were promised. Later, the team uses Mr. Graner’s card to access the computer system to perform Overtime Contingency like he did with them. Dylan succeeds in executing the procedure, but it is unclear whether or not the process works. The episode then fades to black and builds anticipation for the season finale.

Severance is a dark and unsettling series that refuses to be pigeonholed into one genre. It offers poetic glimpses of horror, a lot of surrealist and quirky comedy, bitesize chunks of character drama, romance, and even science fiction. It is refreshing to see a TV show that refuses to pander to its audience and it is definitely a show worth checking out!
