Toshiba Satalite A105 is an affordable media center laptop with an attractive price point. Its rock-bottom base price makes it significantly less than competing 15.4-inch wide-screen notebooks such as Lenovo 3000 N100, Dell Inspiron E1505, and Micro Express EL80; though these may offer superior performance or battery life respectively they cost significantly more than the Satellite A105.
The Satellite A105 features a modest mix of low- and midrange components, including a 1.60GHz Intel Core Duo T2050 processor, 512MB of average 533MHz RAM and a 120GB hard drive that spins at 5,400rpm. Furthermore, its integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics subsystem should suffice for basic video playback and photo editing needs of most home users.
CNET Labs conducted performance tests on the Satellite A105 that demonstrated its competitive edge against notebooks equipped with faster processors. In fact, it outscored high-end components-loaded Micro Express EL80 by 27%! Unfortunately, however, its battery lasted only 6 hours during our battery test.
When it comes to multimedia features, the Satellite A105's media controls to the left of its keyboard and its front-mounted analog volume dial make an ideal complement to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Furthermore, its S-Video out port enables easy connection with a television set, while its DVD SuperMulti double-layer drive enables creation or burning of discs.
