Despite its profound impact on human life and its central place in religion, love isn’t as easily defined as some other emotions. While most agree on some basic characteristics, defining love is difficult because it has so many different uses and meanings. Love can be the feeling of affection for a close friend or family member, or it can be the intense passion of falling in love. It can be the devotion of a parent for their children, or it can be the dedication of an artist for their work. Love can also be the desire to help those in need or a deep appreciation for a cultural artifact or natural beauty.

Regardless of how you define love, the experience is unique to each individual. The emotion can be triggered by a variety of factors, from hormones (like oxytocin and nitric oxide) to social and cultural influences. It can even be influenced by the beliefs and expectations you have about relationships.

Love can be hard to define and easy to lose sight of when it’s surrounded by so much cliche and pop culture. However, learning how to love well is possible with some simple steps and a clear understanding of the meaning of love.
