vans mte 2 review

Vans has left its distinctive waffle tread mark on a range of outdoorsy subcultures, from skateboarding to snowboarding and surfing to general outdoor adventure footwear. The latest entry in the company’s Mountain Edition line, this pair of Vans UltraRange EXO Hi Gore-Tex MTE-2 shoes, is an ideal choice for cold weather surfers looking for a rugged pair of boots that are tough enough to take on rough conditions.

The MTE-2 model has an All-Trac outsole built with a new all-weather rubber compound that offers significantly improved traction. The HydroGuard 360o waterproof membrane keeps you dry and a PrimaLoft(r) zonal insulation package will keep your feet warm. A single-density, molded sockliner with an OrthoLite(r) topsheet completes the package for comfort and performance.

Unlike some snow and rain boots, the MTE-2’s sole is designed with negative space around the foot as well as small, shallow lugs for added grip on slippery surfaces. The lugs do pack down with snow, but they don’t pack down so much that the shoes feel clunky and awkward when walking on slippery surfaces.

The MTE-2 is a bit heavier than its vulcanized shoe ancestor, but that extra weight provides the stability needed to navigate precarious terrain without feeling clumsy or unstable. Many buyers say the extra weight is well worth it to have a sturdy pair of shoes that can stand up to the elements while also delivering great boardfeel. The MTE-2 is also a good choice for those that prefer a snug, supportive fit. The molded sockliner conforms to the curves of your foot, providing a snug and cozy ride all day long.
