What Do Nuns Wear to Bed?

Nuns often wear regular apparel underneath their robes, especially those who live in cold environments. For example, some may wear a warm sweater or t-shirt beneath their uniform, paired with pants or a skirt. In general, these clothing items are practical in nature and exemplify the nun’s devotion to her religion.

In addition to their regular wardrobe, most nuns also have a specific sleeping garment that is in adherence to their religious dress codes. This could be a variation of their habit, or it might be a nightgown. Additionally, some orders require that nuns sleep in communal dormitories, while others allow them to sleep in individual rooms within the convent. Regardless of the location, it is important that nuns have a comfortable place to rest at the end of the day.

One of the most significant things that distinguishes a nun from other women is her habit. A habit is a long, full-length robe worn by nuns as a symbol of their commitment to religious life and modesty. The color of the habit can be significant, as well. For example, white habits are typically worn by orders that focus on prayer and contemplation, such as the Carmelites and Poor Clares. Other colors, such as black, are worn by other orders that emphasize service and chastity. In order to create a nun’s nighttime attire, she should pair her tunic with a long skirt and long-sleeved shirt or blouse. Nun collars are often rolled into a curved shape, rather than sticking out like neck ruffs. They should also be pinned at the nape and secured with a bobby pin.
