SSB stand for Services Selection Board. This esteemed organization plays a crucial role in the selection and recruitment of officers for India’s armed forces. The SSB interview process is renowned for being intensive, challenging and comprehensive. In this article, we’ll take a look at what does ssb mean and examine the significant functions of the SSB.

Single sideband is a special form of amplitude modulation (AM). Unlike traditional AM transmissions, where the carrier signal is used to encode voice information, SSB encodes only the variations in the signal amplitude. Without the carrier, SSB signals require significantly less power. This reduced power requirement allows more stations to operate simultaneously in an amateur radio band. SSB also has the added benefit of using far less spectrum than AM signals.

The RF front end of an SSB receiver is similar to that of an AM or FM receiver, but it employs a superheterodyne circuit to reduce the incoming RF signal to a lower intermediate frequency for processing. SSB signals are then demodulated into audio by a beat frequency oscillator. The demodulated audio is then sent back into the SSB receiver as an RF carrier.

While many weekend boaters may not need to talk to people thousands of miles away, marine SSB is very useful in the case of an emergency or distress call. A distress call sent via SSB can activate the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) to alert nearby ships of the situation.
