What Does Tele Mean?

The prefix tele is used to describe something that happens at a distance. It is the same word that goes into words such as telegraph, which sent written (coded) messages over wires; telephone, which carries sound over lines; and television, which brings images from far away into our homes. The use of the combining form tele is spreading to other new ways that people interact over long distances, such as telemedicine and teleconferences. Nantucket hospitals, for example, have partnered with Boston hospitals to offer tele-radiology services for patients.
