When you think of Target, you probably envision a large store with the retailer's red bullseye logo. While over 96 percent of Americans are familiar with Target stores, many individuals may not know what is a super target or what the difference between a regular and a super target store is. While a regular Target store provides its shoppers with a wide range of products, the addition of a grocery section to a super target store allows these larger shops to provide a comprehensive shopping experience that includes groceries, household items, apparel, and technology.
The first super target opened in Omaha, Nebraska in 1995. The store was designed to be an extension of the Target Greatland format and was 50% larger than the average Target store. In addition to providing more product selection, super targets also offered additional services such as photo studios and health clinics. Similarly, super target locations had an increased number of food and beverage options, including restaurants.
Currently, there are about 239 super targets throughout the United States. Most of these super stores can be found in major metropolitan areas, with the majority located in the Midwest. In fact, there are more than double the number of super target locations in Minnesota compared to other regions in the country.
While there are a handful of super targets in the East Coast, these stores do not offer a full grocery section. In order to see if a store is a super target, customers can visit the retailer's website and type in their zip code or address to determine whether or not there is a super target nearby.
