Whether you’re looking to upgrade your phone from the latest iPhone or want to stay ahead of the technology curve, it seems like new smartphones are constantly being released. But upgrading to the newest device can be expensive. That’s where AT&T Next comes in. AT&T Next is the carrier’s version of an early upgrade program that lets you trade in your current smartphone and upgrade to a new one after just a few months – for only $5 more a month.

The best AT&T plans

When you purchase a new AT&T phone at an AT&T store or online, you will have the option to enroll in AT&T Next up right before checkout. The device and installment plan prices will be displayed on your screen, along with the full retail price of the AT&T Next Up option. You will be offered the option to enroll in AT&T Next Up for a monthly fee of $6, which will be added on top of your device installment plan price and mobile data plan.

AT&T Next Up is basically an early upgrade program that allows you to swap your device for a new one once it’s paid off in full. The program is designed to keep customers using AT&T’s network, purchasing AT&T phones, and upgrading their devices regularly – in other words, it has a churn benefit for AT&T. It’s also a very deceptive way to sell smartphones, especially in an age where wireless carriers are being called out on their practice of hiding the true cost of a smartphone.
