While big providers have been touting their "next generation 4G" networks, MetroPCS has positioned itself as an affordable alternative with low-cost no-contract plans. The upstart wireless carrier, based in Richardson, Texas, serves more than a dozen metropolitan areas with basic talk, text, and Web service for $60 a month. However, what isn't immediately apparent when you sign up for service is the fine print that reads: "Use of MetroWEB data is subject to your rate plan terms and conditions and may be limited by available bandwidth."

You acknowledge that our Web and Data Rate Plans are designed to support HTML/WAP browsing, email, intranet access to corporate intranets, some productivity applications, and downloading of legitimate audio content (video streaming is naughty). You also recognize that our network is not intended to act as a home broadband replacement. We may use a variety of network management techniques, including but not limited to, traffic shaping, throttling, compression, rerouting, prioritization and other methods to manage our Data Content.
You also agree that you will not use our Service for Web broadcasting or to operate servers, telemetry devices or supervisory control and data acquisition devices. Furthermore, you cannot tether the Device with any application (through use of connection kits, other phone/smartphone to computer accessories or BLUETOOTH(r) or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops). You acknowledge that you are responsible for all activity that occurs on your device during any MetroWEB Service session and that any callers to your Device during such a session will be "busy" or directed to voice mail.
