In the early days of the internet, cyberspace was a novelty that played primarily to tech geeks and futurists. But today, it’s hard to imagine life without the internet. And even more exciting, the world is moving into Web 3.0, or the extended reality internet, and it’s all thanks to an emerging technology called xri.
XRI (Extensible Resource Identifier) is a specification and resolution protocol for abstract structured identifiers. It enables a consistent naming and discovery service for resources across domains, directories, interaction protocols, and transport mechanisms.
It offers a standard syntax for human-readable i-names and machine-parsable i-numbers, as well as standardized formats for metadata about resources, including their current location. It also supports a hierarchy and polyarchy of namespaces and the ability to express intent that parts or all of an i-name be permanent. Its discovery mechanism uses HTTP and simple XML documents, and it can be independent of DNS.
A key goal of XRI and XDI is to improve Web searching. Instead of generating thousands of links, a search engine using XRI and XDI would return only those that are more meaningfully related.
