What It Is Lyrics by Doechii
When creating a song, lyrics are much more than just words paired with a melody. They’re the heartbeat of a song, carrying a message and connecting the artist to their audience. They can transport us to different worlds, evoke powerful images and deep insights, all within just a few minutes.
The word lyric is a compound of two Greek words:
While there are many ways to write lyrics, a good starting point is to choose interesting phrases that fit the mood you’re trying to create (Dire Straits’ 'Walk of Life', Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 'Walking on Water'). It helps to pick phrases that are familiar enough to sound engaging and recognizable (e.g. a famous quote, or a figure of speech), but not so familiar that they feel overused and become cliches (Katrina & The Waves' 'Walking on Sunshine', Everything But the Girl's 'Walking Wounded').
From there, it’s important to make sure the words are consistent in their tense, and in the way they relate to each other. This will be an area we explore in our next instalment on the basics of lyrics.
