When it comes to work-from-home policies, few people are as adamant about maintaining office-only mandates as Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter CEO Elon Musk. In a wide-ranging interview with CNBC on Tuesday, the billionaire took another swing at remote work, suggesting that those who take advantage of it are "detached from reality."
Musk's comments come after several Silicon Valley companies have announced return-to-office imperatives for some employees. In particular, he called out the tech sector's "laptop classes" for living in la-la land and pointed out that service workers, like auto workers, must show up at the office every day.
While he didn't specify exactly what kind of laptop he uses, it's likely that Musk works off of an iPhone 12 Pro Max and an iPad. In past interviews, he's mentioned that he prefers to use simple and straightforward devices. In fact, he once said that his favorite laptop was the one that he first bought when he was 15 years old, an early version of the MacBook Air.
Musk is also a signatory of the Giving Pledge, which encourages the world's richest individuals to donate most of their wealth. He's already given away more than $100 million in his lifetime and has committed to giving most of his fortune to charity. This includes a portion of his holdings in SolarCity, which he bought in 2016. The company was previously owned by his cousins Peter Rive and Lyndon Haines, who were fired after Musk's takeover.
