When Robots Rule the World

Robotic technology has become instrumental in many areas like improving transportation, developing artificial body parts, providing safety and rescue, and advancing scientific research. Despite all this, some people fear that robots will eventually take over the world. But if we look at the Scriptures, it’s clear that when robots rule the world, it won’t be in any way that is harmful to mankind (Romans 8:38-39; Ephesians 3:12).

In fact, if properly managed, there is no reason why we should not welcome robotics in many areas of human life. We will need to make sure that the technology is well regulated, and that it doesn’t replace or compete with jobs for which humans are better qualified.

The most promising robots are those that mimic human behavior and expression, but scientists have a long way to go before they can build a robot that is indistinguishable from human beings. In addition, robots are prone to equipment failure and high-tech hiccups just as computers are today. They are also unable to grasp and quickly respond to complex social and ethical issues that require abstract and creative thinking, or the ability to weigh alternatives.

Worse, if scientists create robots that are self-reproducing, they could eventually displace all biological life, even humans. That would lead to a new age of feudalism, where workers are captive to a small number of overlords who own the robots that replace them at work. It is important that we develop public policies that avoid these dangers, based on the biblical principles of justice and equity.
