Walking is one of the most basic, yet vitally important ways we move through the world. It's a natural human ability that we often take for granted, but it took quite some time to develop and become a fully-fledged form of locomotion. Walking is something we all share and participate in, which is what makes it so interesting when people choose to use it as the basis for a viral meme.

The “when was walking invented” meme is a popular internet trend that features images or videos of people in comical positions as they mimic the way early humans may have moved around when they first began walking. While the origin of this meme is unclear, it has exploded in popularity in recent years and continues to spread across social media platforms.

It's not entirely clear when exactly our ancestors started walking on two legs, or bipedalism, but it's generally accepted that this happened some time before 1.9 million years ago. That's when fossilized footprints were discovered at the Laetoli site in Tanzania, showing that a female Australopithecus afarensis was walking upright on two feet.

Although there are multiple theories on why our ancestors began walking upright, the most likely reason is that it allowed them to better see predators approaching. Other theories include that it freed up their hands to make and use tools, or that it made it easier to travel long distances. Whatever the reason, it is now one of the most fundamental features of human evolution.
