In recent years, new and innovative treatments have been developed for a variety of diseases. One of the careers that combine DNA technology and medicine is a clinical laboratory geneticist. These professionals analyze blood and other DNA samples to diagnose genetic disorders and illnesses.
Forensic science is the application of the methods of the natural and physical sciences to legal matters, mainly criminal investigations and civil suits. It includes a number of different disciplines, such as crime scene investigation, trace evidence, impression evidence (such as fingerprints and footwear), controlled substances, ballistics, firearm and toolmark examination, and the analysis of physical injury and trauma.
DNA profiling became a crucial tool for forensic scientists in the early 1990s, and it has become the primary method used to identify victims and suspects. It is also useful for exonerating innocent people and clearing up wrongful convictions. DNA profiling works by comparing the genetic markers found on all individuals to those stored in public databases.
For example, forensic genetic genealogy was used to catch the Golden State Killer. It involved comparing the DNA of murderers and other suspects to that of victims and relatives in public databases. When there was a match, investigators could then identify the suspect and close criminal cases. Currently, DNA profiling looks at 20 regions of the genome to create a profile.
